The title, "Calling" conjures up for me quite a vivid image that, in a time long past, someone is blowing a wind instrument on the hillside to send a signal or raise the alarm in the village on the other side of the valley. I don't know why I had this image in mind when I wrote the piece.

Calling was co-commissioned by the Tokyo Opera City bassoonist, Ayako Kuroki and Rebekah Heller of the I.C.E. in New York. I wrote it in the knowledge that I would be writing a Bassoon Concerto for Pascal Gallois to perform in my orchestral portrait concert at Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Writing Calling has given me a wonderful opportunity to study what the bassoon is capable of before I tackle the concerto.
