Ocean Breaker
I must be a rather strange composer—my orchestral piece Glorious Clouds is about bacteria, and now Ocean Breaker, despite its title, is actually about clouds.
The inspiration for this piece came from a book on clouds that I found in a London gift shop. It was likely intended for children, filled with beautiful illustrations of various cloud formations. But what captivated me most was a type of cloud called Fluctus. These clouds resemble ocean breakers, curling into waves when the wind above them moves significantly faster than the wind below. A rare phenomenon, apparently.
I was drawn to this image, especially because this orchestral work already had a sense of weightlessness and fluid motion. At the same time, it carries the spirit of a "concerto for orchestra"—where every instrument, even the tuba, has its moment in the spotlight. The music continuously shifts focus, passing the energy from one section to another. Melodies and phrases move at different speeds, mirroring the way Fluctus clouds take shape through contrasting wind currents.
Having written concertos for many instruments—including some rather unusual ones—I felt the time was right to create a work that celebrates the entire orchestra. Ocean Breaker is that piece: an orchestral concerto where the waves of sound surge, collide, and transform, much like the ever-changing sky.

オーシャン・ブレイカー
僕はかなり変わった作曲家なのでしょう。管弦楽作品『Glorious Clouds』はバクテリアについてですが、今度の『Ocean Breaker』は、タイトルとは裏腹に、実は雲についてなのです。
この作品のインスピレーションは、ロンドンのギフトショップで見つけた雲に関する本から得ました。その本はおそらく子供向けのもので、さまざまな雲の形の美しいイラストが満載でした。しかし、僕が最も魅了されたのは、Fluctusと呼ばれる雲の種類でした。この雲は、上部の風が下部の風よりも大幅に速い場合に波状にうねる、海の波に似た雲です。珍しい現象のようです。
僕はこのイメージに強く惹きつけられました。特に、このオーケストラ作品にはすでに無重力感と流動的な動きが感じられていたからです。同時に、この作品には「オーケストラのための協奏曲」の精神が息づいています。すべての楽器、チューバでさえもがスポットライトを浴びる瞬間があるのです。この音楽は絶えず焦点を移しながら、エネルギーをセクションからセクションへと伝えていきます。旋律やフレーズは異なる速度で動き、Fluctusの雲が対照的な気流によって形作られる様子を反映しています。
僕はこれまで、多くの楽器（中には珍しい楽器も）のための協奏曲を作曲してきましたが、今こそオーケストラ全体を称える作品を作る時だと感じました。Ocean Breakerはまさにその作品です。音の波が押し寄せ、ぶつかり合い、変化していくオーケストラ協奏曲で、刻々と変化する空のようです。
